Rajasthan is one of the finest tourist destinations of
India and has varied geographical feature. Rajasthan
is located in the northwestern part of India. With an
area of 342,239 sq km, Rajasthan is the largest state
of India. Rajasthan is surrounded by Punjab to the
north, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to the northeast,
Gujarat to the southwest, Madhya Pradesh to the
southeast and Pakistan to the west. Jaipur is the
capital city of Rajasthan.
The predominant geographic feature of Rajasthan is the
Aravalli Range. The Aravalli range, one of the oldest
mountain ranges of the world, runs from southwest to
northwest of Rajasthan. Mount Abu nestles at the
southwestern tip of the Aravalli range. The
northwestern region of the state is sandy and
infertile. Most of the northwestern region of the
state is located in Thar Desert. Bikaner is the
largest city located in the desert. The Thar Desert is
sparsely populated. Godwar, Marwar and Shekhawati fall
in the region of thorn scrub forest. The northwestern
thorn scrub forest features less than 750 mm of an
annual rainfall, above 45°C in summer and below 0°C in
winter.
The southeastern region of Rajasthan is relatively
more fertile than northwestern region. Vagad region in
the southeast of Rajasthan is one of the wettest
regions with thick forest. Mount Abu, a picturesque
hill station, with Dilwar Temple is located along 1200
m high plateau. |
